Spouses Stab Voodoo Dolls When “Hangry” Study Reveals

By Adam Kazda | March 15, 2016

If you’ve ever snapped at someone when you were hungry or had someone snap at you when they were hungry, then you’ve experienced the “hangry” phenomenon. “Hanger” is defined when someone is more irritable because they are past due for a meal.

The National Science Foundation (NSF) gave $331,000 to a study that used voodoo dolls to help tell if you’re ‘hangry.’ Researchers gave married couples voodoo dolls and were told to stick a pin in the doll when they were angry with their spouse. The study concluded that if a spouse’s blood sugar was low, the doll was stuck with twice as many pins, compared with people with high levels of blood sugar.

Coats explained to his Senate colleagues the new phenomenon: “Now I am told by my younger staff that there’s a new word around called ‘hangry.’ I didn’t know what that was. But hangry, as we’ve looked into this, means that if you are hungry, you tend to get a little bit disjointed and you’re more angry than you were if you’re not hungry.” Watch the full video here.
