To help reduce the risk of SNAP (Food Stamps) fraud, states are using data analytics, including data matching and data mining, to identify patterns or trends indicative of fraud. Advantages include automated fraud detection and the ability to prioritize cases most likely involving fraud. “For example, officials in Mississippi reported that overpayment collections increased $2 million since the state incorporated more data techniques into its fraud detection efforts.” While rooting out fraud more effectively and efficiently is good news, officials say high cost, resources, data limitations, and organizational support are the main challenges in using these more advanced data-analytics techniques.
