The Government Accountability Office (GAO) helps the federal government run more efficiently and effectively. This year, the work of GAO helped save taxpayers over $75 billion —a return of about $124 on every dollar invested in GAO. Savings areas included revising spending limits for Medicaid demonstration projects ($36.8 billion), and helping the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) achieve and measure the benefits of its fraud prevention system ($1.3 billion). In addition to financial savings, GAO produced 1,300 nonfinancial benefits that enhanced programs throughout the federal government such as public safety and protecting U.S. manufacturers.
