Pursuit’s Weekly QuizCap

By Bryan Berky & Adam Kazda | November 21, 2018

Welcome back to the Weekly QuizCap. This week, Thanksgiving is front and center, tailgating becomes tax deductible, and Congress gives the gift that keeps on giving.

Thanksgiving is almost here! Under which president did Thanksgiving become a federal holiday?

Correct! Wrong!

Abraham Lincoln was the president who established the holiday of Thanksgiving, but FDR established the modern-day thanksgiving, moving it to the fourth Thursday of November.

Thanksgiving was one of the four original federal holidays that President Lincoln established in 1870. Which of the following was NOT one of the original four?

Correct! Wrong!

George Washington’s Birthday (since changed to Presidents Day) was established as a federal holiday in 1880.

Yesterday, President Trump gave a presidential pardon to one lucky turkey. Who was the first president to pardon a turkey?

Correct! Wrong!

This year, President Trump chose the turkey "Peas" over "Carrots" - but both turkeys were eventually pardoned. Lucky!

Speaking of turkeys, how many will be cooked this Thanksgiving?

Correct! Wrong!

That’s a lot of turkeys! On Christmas, Americans will consume about half that, 22 million.

Thanksgiving is a time to be thankful for what we have, especially giving thanks to those who protect our freedom. How many pounds of turkey does the military send to troops?

Correct! Wrong!

The Defense Logistics Agency will deliver more than 300,000 pounds of turkey to field kitchens, galleys, and dining facilities throughout the Middle East, Europe, Africa and on the southwestern border.

A favorite side dish for many Americans is cranberry sauce. 100 million pounds of cranberries will be thrown out before they even hit the market this year. What is the reason?

Correct! Wrong!

The Trump trade war spurred Europe to place a 25% tariff on U.S. Cranberry-Juice concentrate. High supply and lower demand created a supply glut, so the federal government stepped in and ordered a 15 percent cut in the production to keep prices up for the farmers. Cronyism for the win.

The Egg Bowl, the annual rivalry game between Ole Miss and Mississippi State will be played on Thanksgiving Day. True or false: Ole Miss fans are eligible for a federal tax break for tailgating.

Correct! Wrong!

The Republican tax bill eliminated a tax break for donations tied to college athletics seating rights. Ole Miss athletics looked at the letter of the law and found that donations tied to parking spot rights are still tax deductible, thus creating the tailgate tax break!

More than $700 million in American tax dollars have gone to Turkey since 2017, including $12,000 to celebrate Kevork Malikyan. What is Kevork Malikyan known for?

Correct! Wrong!

The State Department pitched in $12,000 to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Turkish actor’s career. The event featured a screening of the Last Crusade along with a workshop with Malikyan. Ask yourself, why do you seek to waste American tax dollars?

One of the many traditions on Thanksgiving morning is the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. Who shows up at the end of the parade?

Correct! Wrong!

Santa! I know him! Thanksgiving, and the arrival of Santa at the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade marks, for most, the beginning of the Christmas season.

This weekend also marks the beginning of holiday gift giving. How much debt per person is Congress giving millennials?

Correct! Wrong!

That’s just in current debt. When counting the amount of unfunded liabilities, we are on the hook for $923,000 per taxpayer – or $30,000 per year for the next 30 years. Each!

What did Congress do this week to fix our massive national debt and run-a-way unfunded liabilities?

Correct! Wrong!

While we have a lot to be thankful for, Congress did not make our list this year.
