‘Profiles in Waste’ is a series from Pursuit highlighting some of the smaller abuses of your tax dollars. Although small compared to viral billion dollar waste, effective oversight means finding the small before it turns into the big.
This week we highlight the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). One of the main drivers of our $130+ billion in improper payments every year, Medicaid payments make up 22%, or $29.12 billion, of those annual improper payments. By making oversight a priority, states would better serve Americans who rely on Medicaid, and would save federal taxpayers billions.
