The United States Social Security Administration (SSA) is an independent agency of the U.S. federal government that administers Social Security, a social insurance program consisting of retirement, disability, and survivors’ benefits. To qualify for most of these benefits, most workers pay Social Security taxes on their earnings; the claimant’s benefits are based on the wage earner’s contributions. Otherwise benefits such as Supplemental Security Income (SSI) are given based on need.

A Path Forward

Established to provide economic security to our retired and disabled population, Social Security is one of of nation’s most beloved programs, but also one of its most controversial. In short, the program will have to be reformed or benefits will be cut for beneficiaries. There are simply not enough workers to pay full program benefits to beneficiaries. Currently, there are only 2.9 workers per beneficiary (In 1945 there were almost 42 per beneficiary), and that number is expected to drop. The program is also outdated and ill-equipped to handle the reality of the 21st century.
